and hagel, and then john brennan. on balance, i think the new team thinks more like the president thinks, when it comes to foreign po policy. this is going to be a team that might not push back as much with regard to cuts or withdrawals or smaller footprints. so i think there may be differences in policy, but in terms of the worth of man for handling the job, they received there, not at all. >> since you went there, let me just switch where i was going and ask you about the smaller footprint. because we do have coming up, the withdrawal of u.s. combat troops from afghanistan, at the end of the year, and we are seeing republicans already going no, i think we had lindsay graham on, we talked about up to 20,000. it's too important not to leave a substantial footprint there. and yet i think the general is right, that we now have a team that seems to be more in sync with president obama and they want a very small footprint, you talked in your book. are they ready for a u.s. troop withdrawal when the time comes. >> i certainly wouldn't try to sell senior officers exactly how many people are re
, panetta, compare it to the new guys. kerry, hagel, john brennan. on balance, i think the new team thinks more like the president thinks when it comes to foreign policy this will be a team that might not push back as much with regard to cuts or withdrawals or smaller footprints or reluctant moves with new eras. in terms of the worth of the man for him and the job they receive there, not at all. >> since you went there, let me sort of switch where i was going and ask you about the smaller footprint. we having coming up the withdrawal of u.s. combat troops from afghanistan at the end of the year, and we are seeing republicans already going, no, i think we need -- lindsay graham on, talked about up to 20,000. it's too important not to leave a substantial footprint there, and yet i think that the general is right that we now have a team that seems to be more in sync with president obama and they want a very small footprint. you talked in your book about training the afghan security forces, are they ready for a total withdrawal of u.s. troops when the time comes? >> i think they are not ready
for that job. and john brennan and acting cia director michael morell remain on the short list. history shows most presidents get the nominees they want but in this political environment, there's no guarantee. >> it used to just be supreme court justices who inspire these sort of partisan free for alls. now it's bleeding down into a cabinet pick as well. >> reporter: the president has already made one choice for secretary of state, senator john kerry for that position. he's expected to have a smooth confirmation. i did talk to a senior administration official, asked him if the president had already settled on names for all of those positions but just not made them public. this official telling me, quote, no decision is final. wolf. >> >> dalothian in hawaii for us. let's dig deeper. the politics behind philly. our sister publication "time" magazine takes a closer look at that. michael crowley is joining us here in "the situation room." thanks for coming in. >> thanks, wolf. >> it's never completely easy getting confirmation. you nominate someone, getting them confirmed. it looks like it's goi
of fights. he's willing to fight on chuck hagel and here you have a guy, john brennan for the cia who said that jihad is a legitimate tenant of isl-- tenet of islam and he said that he's not going to allow the debt ceiling debate to be died to spending cuts which we desperately needs. he obviously -- he wants a fight. what do you make of the strategy that he's employed. >> i think what's happened to him is he feels that by winning a second term, with a slight addition of democrats in the house and the senate he now is, you know, king of the the world to quote an oscar winner of bygone days. and you noticed in these lists, look at the list of the major appointees, starting with brennan and hagel and these are nobody of independent stature. it's not like the first term where he had a clinton, where he had a gates, where he had people who could be a team of rivals. this is a team of essential, you know, fact totems. he wants to rule and he wants to govern and he will not let anybody stand in his way and i think that's what he's saying and he will take on any fight in order to get his people.
the cia, john brennan, the president's adviser for homeland security, is on the short list, michael morell who is the acting director of the cia also on the list. so, the president has some important key positions to fill, and, again, we expect that that could start rolling out as early as next week, ashleigh. >> okay, dan. i hope you get some sunshine while you're there at least a little bit. dan lothian live for us. >> reporter: i hope so, too. >> in hawaii. it's a good assignment, you got to admit. >>> i want to take everybody to the big board, this is cold new york, and the dow is reading up a wee bit perhaps sense christine romans' report the dow reacted nicely, but we're at least out of negative territory albeit by just a fraction. i'll take you live to the new york stock exchange a little later on in this hour. >>> so, we've been hearing all along that former arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords had made plans to visit newtown, connecticut, today. we're not exactly sure who she's meeting with or why, but we certainly have the idea that she knows a thing or two about the crisis t
than about engagement with ideas. we haven't talked about another nomination. john brennan and the nomination to be head of the cia has been underreported, and i think what's striking about that is that what was controversial in 2008, and obama had to withdraw him from nomination from the cia. it hasn't been controversial. what does that say about our politics? i want to venture a bold idea which senator daniel patrick moynihan raised in legislation in both 1991 1k3 1995 which this country should think about abolishing the cia. it has a bad track record. we should take a hard look. forget hearings about president's nominees, but we need a new church committee, a new pike committee. people might go check it out. into the abuses of the security state which has grown beyond the bounds of accountability which this democracy demands. >> let's talk about the left and how they are approaching both of these, and i want to focus first on hagel. we are talking about neo conservatives and how they have come out of the wood work -- not even the wood work. they've come out against hagel
. obama counterterrorism adviser john brennan has made the legal case for targeted killings. some are now expressing concern over brennan in charge of the cia. and scott horton of harper's magazine reports "and the drones are just the beginning of it. the cia has its toe there, but we're going to see the cia probably take a very prominent role in robotic warfare." i'm joined tonight by greenwald, producer, director, and founder of brave new films. he is also the director of an upcoming documentary film "drones exposed" and just completed a trip to the country of pakistan. mr. greenwald, good to have you with us tonight. will there be an issue at brennan's confirmation hearings? what is the likelihood of the senate forcing a debate on drone strikes? there has been very little conversation about it. >> yes. it's actually been very sad, ed, to see how there has almost been a bipartisan silence on this issue. we're hopeful that as we educate people, as people hear more about the drones, as they learn more about them, they will call their senators and they'll say it's essential to ask brennan
for defense and john brennan to the cia. president obama had previously named senator kerry as the new secretary of state, which has now been confirmed. and on the first day of this year, the president and vice president secured the fiscal cliff deal. now, folks, those are just the highlights. but congressional republicans think the president should get to work? here is what happened in the house of representatives today. >> without objection, the house stands adjourned until friday, februa february 1st, 2013. >> friday february 1st? they're cutting out. they're going somewhere, not working. let's bring in bob shrum, contributor of the daily beast. bob, good to have you with us tonight. >> glad to be here, ed. >> you bet. this is quite a strategy to jab at the president like this when they have probably taken more time off than anybody in america in the month of january. does this win? >> no, look. it's a tweet that makes john boehner look like a twit. it's a juvenile move. but there is a method to it. they got to keep their tea party caucus happy. they're losing on issue after issue t
